| Michelle Simpson Sheep measles, or Cysticercus ovis, are cysts found in sheep meat that develop when sheep or goats ingest eggs from the tapeworm Taenia ovis. While the condition poses no risk to human health, the presence of cysts significantly reduces carcass quality and can undermine the reputation of New Zealand farmers as producers of premium sheep meat. Prevention relies on monthly dosing of all dogs that live near, work with, or visit sheep or goats using products that contain praziquantel at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg. The veterinary community plays a pivotal role in ensuring farmers, hunters, contractors, and rural dog owners receive clear, consistent, and practical guidance on dog dosing. | Room 501 Level 5 |
