Introduction to Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS)

Confidence in Coordination: Enhancing veterinary readiness for bigger than usual unplanned events e.g. biosecurity incursions, pharmaceutical shortages, cyber attacks.

In 2014 the New Zealand Government set expectation across all organisations (government, NGO’s, industry) involved in New Zealand's emergency response system, to use CIMS as the management framework for all emergency response.

This course will allow participants to understand the framework and to decide if they want to participate in response to unplanned events.  CIMS is the tool utilised by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) when responding to a biosecurity incursion.

Learning outcomes

  • Enable participants to effectively participate within an MPI or industry response through understanding of framework and processes.
  • Provide the catalyst, knowledge and enthusiasm for further response training.
  • Assist participants to maintain their own wellbeing during and after a response.

Audience

This workshop will be of interest to veterinarians, veterinary nurses and veterinary technicians and especially those employed by the Ministry of Primary Industries.

You must attend both day to receive certification.

Facilitator

Gerard Moore - Emergency Management Specialist

Gerard Moore is recognised as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most experienced emergency managers, with a career in the sector spanning over 30 years. He currently works with government agencies, emergency services, trade organisations, infrastructure organisations, and large tourism companies.  Gerard is a Civil Defence Controller, and you will find him leading or working within teams at emergency unplanned events around the country.

Outside of responses Gerard spends his time training others in response knowledge and skills. He is a leading authority in New Zealand’s Co-ordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) and is driven by a passion for building response capability through professional development and "outstanding course design".  Gerard specialises in bridging the gap between the national response framework and specialised sectors like biosecurity and animal welfare.

Following NZ’s Mycoplasma Bovis outbreak he was engaged by the Ministry for Primary Industries to assist with the redevelopment of their response training pathway and training programs.

For the veterinary sector, Gerard brings critical insights into how practitioners and clinics can effectively integrate and collaborate into national response frameworks with organisations such as MPI during biosecurity incursions, and Civil Defence during a natural disaster.
