Workshops

Avian radiology

Venue: Distinction Luxmore
Date: Friday 25 November
Time: 2pm - 5pm
Cost: $100
Description: Radiographs can be an excellent tool to assess avian patients, given their non-invasive nature and ease of acquisition. A basic knowledge of avian anatomy can result in radiographs becoming incredibly useful as a diagnostic tool. During this classroom workshop, Dr. Emily Short will discuss how to obtain useful avian radiographs and how to interpret them. This workshop aims to improve your radiographic skills whether you work with pet or wild avian patients.
Tutor: Emily Short completed her BVSc at Massey in 2017. After working in small animal practice in New Zealand, she returned to Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine, surgery, and emergency critical care. She continued working at the vet teaching hospital with the internal medicine referral service until joining NZRadVet as a radiology resident in 2020 to pursue her passion of diagnostic imaging. Emily, in collaboration with Kerri Morgan, have recently been researching the use of ultrasound for the assessment of the yolk sac of brown kiwi chicks.

Apiculture/Beekeeping

Venue: Te Anau Lakeside Church (400m from conference venue)
Date: Friday 25 November
Time: 1pm - 4pm
Cost: $100
Description: In New Zealand, the introduced honey bee (Apis mellifera) is a valuable production animal, providing pollination services for horticultural crops and significant export volumes of honey, especially mānuka. Honey bees in New Zealand are free from a number of significant diseases and pests such as European foulbrood and small hive beetle. With the continued interest in backyard beekeeping, the risk of introduced pests poses a threat to numerous native bee species as well as New Zealand's apiculture industry. During this classroom workshop, Sam Lee will run through the basics of beekeeping, followed by Ben Phiri and Craig Pritchard of MPI who will overview the current and potential disease threats to New Zealand's native and non-native bee species, as well as detailing MPIs current apiculture surveillance programme.
