Description

During the talk you will consider clinical scenarios where chronic pain exists and the need to increase analgesia to control the pain.  A logical approach to these situations will be covered and the rationale behind the recommendations provided.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the different pain types in chronic pain
  • Discuss the changes in the central nervous system which occur in chronic pain
  • Create a plan to address various types of chronic pain in dogs and cats
  • Ensure acute analgesia effectively targets pain 

Speakers

Matt Gurney - BVSc CertVA DiplECVAA FRCVS
EBVSTM European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia

Matt is specialist in anaesthesia and analgesia and trained at the University of Liverpool and now works at Eastcott Referrals in the UK. Matt is passionate about pain management, lectures on the subject globally and is the author of many international anaesthesia publications. Matt is Past President of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia and a Co-Founder of The Zero Pain Philosophy. In 2020 Matt was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for Meritorious Contribution to Clinical Practice. 2022 saw Matt awarded the RCVS Knowledge Award for Quality Improvement for launching and implementing a unique anaesthesia safety tool. Matt is one of the co-founders of The Zero Pain Philosophy, an educational resource for vet professionals. 

Carl Bradbrook - BVSc CertVA DipECVAA FRCVS

Carl graduated from the University of Liverpool and after a few fun years in mixed practice undertook a residency in anaesthesia and intensive care at The Royal Veterinary College and Davies Veterinary Specialists in the UK. He has worked in several private and university referral centres, as well as an independent anaesthesia consultant. He co-founded Zero Pain Philosophy, aiming to ensure pain is identified and treated appropriately in our companion animal patients. He has worked at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists since October 2018 and is an RCVS Recognised Specialist and an EBVSรข European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contributions to clinical practice in 2020.
