Massey University's Master of Veterinary Medicine programme

Time commitment: You need to allow about 150 hours for each 15-credit course, and 300 hours for each 30-credit course.  This equates to 5-10 hours per week, however some of this may include work-integrated-learning and reflections

Location: Courses are delivered by distance learning. Contact workshops are held in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Attendance at these is strongly recommended. The contact workshops for the Capstone courses are compulsory and are delivered online.

Course structure

Massey is excited to inform you about important changes coming to the MVM program in 2025. These changes are part of an effort to align the program with the new structure of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) curriculum and to provide more flexibility in your learning.

Enrol in one course with a Certificate of Proficiency, or complete 60 credits with a Postgraduate Certificate in Science and Technology (PGCertScTech), or complete the 120 credit Master of Veterinary Medicine.

Below are the key updates:

New Course Structure in 2025, Massey will offer special topic courses in both 15-credit and 30-credit formats, with options for large animal and small animal topics. Each special topic course will allow you to choose topics that best align with your interests and professional goals, offering some degree of individualized learning.

  • The 30-credit special topic course will run across two semesters (a double-semester course). 
  • The 15-credit special topic course will be offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 as a single-semester course. If you only plan to take 15 credits for the year, you can choose either Semester 1 or Semester 2. 
  • For those in the 30-credit course, you will have the option to change tracks between Semester 1 and Semester 2, providing more flexibility in your studies.

Track Options and Specializations

  • Small Animal Track:
        Semester 1: Orthopaedic Surgery, Endocrinology
        Semester 2: Rehabilitation for Surgery Patients, Dermatology
  • Large Animal Track:
        Semester 1: Calf Medicine
        Semester 2: Ruminant Nutrition
  • Clinical Reasoning and Decision-Making Track (offered across both semesters): This track will include critical topics such as antimicrobial resistance, control of reproduction in dogs and cats, and evaluating risks and benefits of clinical interventions as well as reflecting on your work integrated learning.

Integrated Learning All tracks will incorporate work-integrated learning and reflection to ensure that your academic studies are connected with practical, real-world applications.
