Veterinary refresher scheme for companion animal practice

This is a course for veterinarians returning to companion animal practice or those wanting to change to companion animal practice from another area of clinical practice. It can also be used as a mini-refresher course for those veterinarians already in companion animal practice, who feel they need to update their knowledge and increase their confidence.

Description

Format

This self-directed course consists of four modules. Each module comprises of smaller topics with notes and an assessment quiz. A  discussion forum allows for participants to communicate with other participants. The forums are monitored by a representative of the Companion Animal Veterinarians Branch. Once a module is complete, participants will have access to the module certificate and MyCPD record.

  • Module 1: Anaesthesia and critical care
  • Module 2: Surgery
  • Module 3: Clinical pathology
  • Module 4: Medicine and practical pharmacology

Learning objectives and outcomes

  • Build strong foundations and increase confidence in your core skills and knowledge for companion animal practice.
  • Learn the effects of anaesthesia on physiology and the stages of anaesthesia and recovery, with guidelines for choosing appropriate agents.
  • Learn surgical principles and how to assess the surgical risk for a patient.
  • Learn how to interpret laboratory data and what tests are available in clinical practice.
  • Learn how to work through the most common consultations in companion animal practice – clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring options.
