With climate change and the increased risks associated with emerging infectious diseases, adverse weather events, wildfires, and other natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunami, there is an urgent need to enhance our preparedness, response, and recovery skills as a profession. The expertise of veterinarians in animal health and welfare is well recognised nationally and internationally. However, the profession’s role in disaster management in New Zealand is at times unclear. Veterinary volunteers during responses usually do not have any training in disaster management, or in the safest methods of emergency animal recovery at an incident. This puts the welfare of veterinary staff and animals at a higher risk, with short- and long-term consequences for physical and mental wellbeing.
